Jane Goodall has been celebrated as a "guiding light" across the nation, with countless people paying tribute online to the conservationist who passed away recently at the age of 91.

This celebrated scientist and founder of the Jane Goodall Institute was highly respected in the country, and her research and findings were ubiquitous in Chinese educational materials, which listed her among "women of achievement" in text books.

Educational Impact Through Roots and Shoots

Her institute's flagship Roots and Shoots program collaborated with over a thousand educational institutions across the country, and over three decades it trained 10,000 teachers and informed numerous students across 25 provinces about protecting animals and the natural world.

"Her journey is truly inspiring, and I was deeply influenced by it," Sun Xin from the National Zoological Museum stated.

"It's easy to shout slogans, but it's very challenging to actually get things done and create change," the expert noted, who had met Goodall on multiple instances.

Expert Tributes and Widespread Appreciation

Several prominent researchers in the country paid tribute to the conservationist following her passing.

"Through her personal efforts, she persistently campaigned for wildlife and nature conservation, hoping that people would cherish and protect nature," the specialist explained.

Shi Jun from the Chinese Academy of Sciences referred to Dr. Goodall as "a model for all biologists and environmentalists."

Long-standing Connection with China

Official news outlets noted the scientist's "enduring relationship with the country," which she visited for the 17th time last year, and spoke to state broadcaster, remarking on ecological improvements in China.

"Her conservation ethos and spirit have influenced numerous individuals in China," reported Chinese media.

In recent years, the primatologist commented about the changes in the nation since her initial trip almost 20 years earlier, with government efforts driven in part by the decline of natural habitats such as the major river system, and the rise of rare public protests.

"There is no doubt that increasing numbers of people have become aware of ecological issues and the danger of the extinction of numerous animals due to people's actions," she remarked.

The scientist acknowledged it was accurate that the nation had caused great harm to the ecosystem domestically and overseas, but her vision was that the nation "could lead the way in eliminating the need for fossil fuels and create a greener tomorrow."

News of her passing also prompted hundreds of millions of engagements on social media platforms such as Chinese microblogging sites, where a relevant topic was seen by millions, and video platforms, where Goodall posted videos.

"Thank you for your contributions to wildlife research and protection, and for providing motivation for women everywhere," said one comment under the scientist's most recent video, in which she called for action and optimism against conflict and environmental destruction globally occurring, and the increasing effects of climate change.

"Years back, I participated in the environmental programme 'Roots & Shoots' at school, established by Dr. Goodall in my school. It has shaped my perspective significantly," shared a Weibo user.

"Xi Zhilong", the founder of Wild China Film, said Goodall had become "an inspirational beacon, leading us forward."

"The green seeds she has sown across the world will offer promise to this magnificent but vulnerable planet," he added.
