Critical Role Campaign 4 Unveils the Soldiers Group

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept fans guessing with deep backstory, a wide array of characters, and a gripping narrative showcasing divine entities, demons, and sinister influences growing in strength within the city.

Heads-up: Spoilers for the latest installment of the new season are included.

The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced

Episode 3 finished on a huge suspense moment and introduced the first table of adventurers who will separate from the main group to embark on their separate journey, separate from the other two tables.

The Soldiers table consists of the determined fighter (portrayed by Travis Willingham), the nimble rogue (Laura), the fierce warrior (Whitney Moore), the cleric (the player), and the mysterious adventurer (the actor).

The Reason for Division

Considering 13 cast members, it was clear from the start that maintaining everyone at the same party would be impossible.

This explains, the initial installments of the new season serve as an Prelude, weaving together the personal journeys before splitting into three smaller tables: Soldiers, Schemers, and Questers.

The Nature of the Combat Party

Per Brennan Lee Mulligan, the Soldiers table is for adventurers who prefer a typically action-packed fight-heavy gameplay experience where peaceful solutions are scarce.

Upon first impression, characters like the reluctant priest the cleric might look mismatched, but the events of the third episode show why these five characters are best suited for the warrior group.

Reasons to Leave

First, the party has a clear idea where to head next after a violent opening clash with the antagonists.

An old friend of Thjazi Fang—whose death initiated the campaign’s events—used the enemy for his personal gain, entering the hidden lair, attacking the character, and stealing all the magical artifacts to auction.

The antagonist then cleared his obligations and escaped to a secure base in Gormalay, Timmony, beyond the urban center, with Teor’s brother pursuing him.

Character Drivers

Secondly, each character has a personal reason to depart the metropolitan area:

  • The agile hero, as the companion and trusted friend, desires revenge.
  • The adventurer has experience in the northern area and cautions that it is a nasty location.
  • The strong character and Wicander, having disobeyed his relatives’ demands to eliminate the target and instead rescued him, have no other options.
  • Yet, their status as important members in House Halovar could assist the party enter areas they usually can’t.
  • Moreover, The grateful character swore a unbreakable promise to Wicander for his rescue and will now follow him everywhere.

Fugitives

Finally, all of them are hunted by the authorities that control Dol-Makjar for a variety of reasons, making lingering locally too risky:

  • The agile adventurer and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
  • The warrior and The cleric turned against the influential house and the army of fiends they are aligned with.
  • The target is wanted dead by House Halovar.

This results in them few options but to head to the remote area in search of the antagonist.

Upcoming Developments

From episode three’s follow-up content, we learn that the warrior group will be absent the following episode, leaving the other eight cast members to assemble the Questers and Planners tables.

Viewers can expect learning which characters will be in which group in Campaign 4’s last Overture episode, released on next week.
