The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Sees Significant Partnership Forged Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Discussions Taking Place

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of major political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
