Users Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these medications should be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
